UofM Student Branch – About Us

The University of Manitoba ASHRAE Student Branch offers student members the
opportunity to interact and ‘network’ with members of the local ASHRAE Chapter,
to participate in technical tours, learn from guest speakers, present technical
papers, and to interact with other students with the same career
interests.

The Executive Team consists of:

Meghan Guyot (P.Eng) – Faculty Advisor

Meghan completed her B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D in mechanical engineering at the University of Manitoba and now works as an Instructor in the Price Faculty of Engineering at U of M.  As an instructor, she teaches many undergraduate courses in the areas of thermofluids and numerical methods.  She has recently started teaching the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning course which allowed her to see how interested students are in HVAC design and careers in this field.  She is now excited to be a part of the ASHRAE Student Branch and hopes it encourages more students to pursue careers in HVAC.

Raphae Shami – President

Rafae Shami is a third year Mechanical Engineering student the University of Manitoba. Along with his involvement with the ASHRAE student branch as president he is an active member of several other student groups, including the University of Manitoba Engineering Society, University of Manitoba Space Applications and Technology Society, and University of Manitoba Association of Tiny Tractors. His involvement in these groups shows his enthusiasm and commitment to learning and his future career in engineering. Rafae’s first involvement with ASHRAE began with the HVAC engineering design elective offered by at the University of Manitoba where he met and engaged with professionals from the HVAC engineering industry and came out of the course with a positive experience. The first opportunity to be involved in ASHRAE presented itself with the HVAC course and the rest is history.

Dylan Ricard – Vice President

Dylan provides support to the president in operating the student branch. This includes helping chair meetings, maintaining relations with other student groups at the University of Manitoba, and assisting in event planning and recruitment initiatives. Also, he works closely with the student branch advisor to maintain accurate membership records for the branch.

He is currently a 4th-year student in mechanical engineering, with a particular interest in building energy efficiencies. He grew up on a small family farm in southern Manitoba, where he developed a strong sense of volunteerism and a desire to support the local community. This mindset has grown throughout his university experience as he has strived to assist his fellow students: from volunteering for other student groups, to working as a course TA, to now helping educate students on the HVAC&R industry and providing opportunities to network through the ASHRAE student branch.

Jessica Wilson – Secretary / Treasurer

Jessica’s role involves taking meeting minutes at all meetings and managing the budget. She just graduated in January from UofM with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a thermofluids stream. She has participated in various student groups at the UofM since 2018, including the Wind Energy Design Team and the Student Energy UofM Chapter. Jessica is currently working at KGS Group as a Mechanical Engineer-in-Training, where she is specializing in energy modelling. Jessica is passionate about sustainability and how it relates to building envelopes and energy systems.
